If your bike is your livelihood, don’t risk losing it. Follow these 8 simple tips to protect your ride—and your income.
Motorcycles are an important asset for many Malaysians, especially those in the lower-income group who rely on them for work and daily commuting.
However, motorcycle theft cases are on the rise. Don’t let your motorcycle become an easy target! Follow these 10 essential steps to protect your motorcycle from thieves.
1️⃣ Lock Your Motorcycle with an Extra Lock
Don’t rely solely on the original lock. Use a brake disc lock, cut-resistant steel chain, or a U-lock for an extra layer of security.
Additional tip: Lock your motorcycle to a metal pole or solid structure so thieves can't lift it away.
2️⃣ Park in a Safe Location
Always park in well-lit areas with CCTV or security surveillance. If possible, park near shops or areas frequently passed by people.
Avoid dark and quiet places that make it easier for thieves to act!
3️⃣ Install an Alarm System or GPS Tracker
A loud alarm can deter thieves. Better yet, install a GPS tracker so you can locate your motorcycle if it gets stolen.
GPS installation is now more affordable and could save your motorcycle.
4️⃣ Don’t Leave Valuables Behind
Items like helmets, jackets, or bags left on the motorcycle may attract thieves.
If you need to leave your helmet, use a special lock to secure it to the motorcycle.
5️⃣ Store It in an Enclosed Space If Possible
If you have a garage or storage area, keep your motorcycle inside. Add an extra lock to the garage door for better security.
Thieves tend to target motorcycles left in open areas!
6️⃣ Record the Chassis & Engine Numbers
Keep a record of your motorcycle’s chassis and engine numbers. If theft occurs, this will help the police identify your motorcycle.
Take regular photos of your motorcycle as proof of ownership!
7️⃣ Check Your Motorcycle Regularly
Always inspect your motorcycle before and after rides. Ensure there are no signs of tampering, such as loose screws or disturbed locks.
The sooner you detect a problem, the quicker you can respond!
8️⃣ Get Motorcycle Insurance
Motorcycle insurance can provide compensation if your motorcycle is stolen or damaged. Choose a plan that offers full theft protection.
Don’t see insurance as an extra cost—it’s essential protection!
🔍 What To Do If Your Motorcycle Gets Stolen?
1️⃣ Report to the Police Immediately
Go to the nearest police station and file a report. Include the chassis number, engine number, and registration document as proof of ownership.
2️⃣ Contact Your Insurance Company
If your motorcycle is insured, inform the insurance company to start the claim process.
3️⃣ Check the Second-Hand Motorcycle Market
Sometimes thieves sell stolen motorcycles online or at certain workshops. Check second-hand motorcycle sales platforms for any leads.
