On the bright and sunny morning of Saturday, 14th December 2024, a team of 51 individuals from Parkson Credit, including Executive Director Mr. Danny Poh, top management, and employees from various departments, gathered at the entrance of Kuala Selangor National Park (KSNP).
This united effort marked the company’s inaugural mangrove reforestation CSR initiative, guided by the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS), a leading organization dedicated to biodiversity and sustainable development.
The objective was clear: to combat coastal degradation and restore vital ecosystems by planting 420 mangrove saplings. Mangroves, often called the "guardians of the coast," are crucial to maintaining ecological balance. They act as natural barriers against coastal erosion, serve as carbon sinks to mitigate climate change, and provide critical habitats for marine species.
Before rolling up their sleeves, the participants attended a briefing by an experienced guide from MNS. They were instructed on the proper techniques for planting mangroves such as how to dig a hole into the ground, removing polybags holding the saplings without damaging the roots as well as tying the saplings securely to wooden stakes to ensure they remain upright and stable.
Equipped with rubber boots, garden gloves, and bucket hats, the team eagerly embraced the challenge. Armed with poles for digging, they plunged into the muddy terrain to begin their first-ever hands-on experience in mangrove planting. The saplings were planted in quick succession, each one symbolizing a step toward ecological restoration.
This activity served as more than just a day of volunteering—it was an opportunity to educate participants about the urgent need for conservation and the critical role of mangroves in sustaining coastal ecosystems. Beyond environmental benefits, the initiative also supported the livelihoods of local communities, who supplied the mangrove saplings.
In total, the team contributed an impressive 153 man-hours to this impactful cause. By focusing on actions that matter, Parkson Credit emphasizes its commitment to a sustainable future, one mangrove sapling at a time.
